Benefits to becoming a STUDENT AT Band Aid School of Music

Part of the Inspiration Behind School of Rock

Since 2000, Band Aid School of Music’s owner and director, James Mays, has been building and empowering real rock bands — teaching not just musicianship, but the skills it takes to thrive as an artist. His work helping young musicians form, lead, and perform in bands was part of the inspiration behind the movie School of Rock starring Jack Black.

At Band Aid, students don’t just learn songs — they become bands. They cover the masters, write original music, record, book shows, manage the business side of their band, and produce their own performances — all while learning how to collaborate, lead, and absolutely melt faces on stage.

Texas’ #1 Performance-Based Music School

At Band Aid School of Music, we believe music is meant to be played, shared, and felt — not just practiced alone in a bedroom. Students learn faster and have more fun when they’re preparing for a performance, and the science (and the smiles) back that up.

Performance teaches more than music. It builds confidence, focus, emotional regulation, and the ability to turn nervous energy into excitement — skills that last a lifetime.

That’s why performance is at the heart of everything we do.

Central Texas’ Only National Champion Rock Band School

In 2003, a student rock band formed and coached by James Mays — After Math — won Best Teen Band in America at Disneyland. They didn’t stop there. The band also took home awards for Best Teen Vocalist, Best Teen Guitarist, and Best Teen Bass Player.

That moment was a turning point.

It clarified a vision: young musicians thrive when they learn in real bands, supported by high standards, strong mentorship, and real-world music skills. Inspired by this success — and earning the title of National Champion Band Coach — James made it official and founded Band Aid School of Music.

Since then, Band Aid has helped thousands of students and families discover their musical voice, build confidence, and step onto stages as performers — creating not just musicians, but rock stars in the making.

Performance Classes
AND Showcases

Twice each semester, students participate in Performance Classes where they play a piece they’ve been working on for staff and peers in a supportive, low-stress environment. These classes are about learning how to perform — not just what to play.

Performance Classes don’t just build musicians — they build community. Many students meet their closest musical friends here, and parents consistently tell us these classes are some of their child’s favorite experiences at Band Aid.

All-Inclusive Live
Music Showcases

Twice a year, Band Aid students take the stage at legendary local venues — turning months of practice into unforgettable, real-world performances. These shows aren’t add-ons. They’re part of the program.

For students who are ready, we even provide staff backing bands, so they can feel what it’s like to play with the pros and absolutely light up the room.

For parents, showcases are the ultimate “aha” moment — you don’t have to wonder if your child is progressing. You can see it, hear it, and feel it. And yes… friends and family are invited to sing along.

Real stages. Real confidence. Real pride.

Year-Round Performance Opportunities

Band Aid students don’t just perform twice a year — they perform all year long. Beyond our semester showcases, we empower student musicians to gain real-world industry experience through live gigs at festivals, venues, businesses, museums, and community events across Central Texas.

Past performance opportunities include: UTOPiAFest, SXSW, ACL Fest, Trail of Lights, Stubbs, Mohawk, North Door, Hole in the Wall, ABGB, Emo’s, Spiderhouse Ballroom, Whip In, Hills Cafe, The Belmont, Swan Dive, Kick-Butt Coffee, Strange Brew, The Back Room, One-2-One, Pecan Street Fest, Thinkery, Central Market, YMCA, Whole Foods, parades, pool parties, house parties, Friends of Friends Gallery shows, Guitarnival, The Kids Are Alright Fest, Jam Fest, Wildflower Fest, and more.

From iconic stages to community gatherings, students learn how to show up, plug in, and perform for real audiences — building confidence, professionalism, and unforgettable memories along the way. Band Aid students don’t just learn music — they live it.

This is where confidence clicks. This is where musicians are made. And this is where learning becomes unforgettable.

Highly Qualified Teachers With Big Hearts and Serious Chops

Band Aid teachers are the real deal — wildly talented, genuinely kind, and the kind of humans you actually want influencing your kid (or yourself). They’re creative, inclusive, and deeply invested in helping students grow — not just as musicians, but as confident, expressive people.

Every Band Aid instructor brings university training, professional performance experience, or both. With multiple teachers for most instruments, we’re able to match each student with the right guide — someone who gets their goals, their style, and how they learn best.

Our teachers don’t believe in one-size-fits-all lessons. They meet students where they are, teach the music they’re excited about, and help them level up with encouragement, structure, and just the right amount of rock-and-roll push.

World-class musicians. Killer teachers. Excellent humans. That’s the Band Aid way.

Raising the Bar for
Music Teacher Training
in Central Texas

No contemporary or rock ’n roll music school trains teachers like Band Aid. We’ve built our own Teacher Training Program, grounded in the National Core Arts Standards and refined through decades of real-world teaching and performance experience.

Every Band Aid instructor — already highly qualified — continues to level up. Our teachers are constantly sharpening their craft, learning more effective ways to teach, connect, and inspire students of all ages.

Each year, our staff re-certifies as a Band Aid Teacher through ongoing training, testing, and evaluation. That means your teacher isn’t just talented — they’re current, intentional, and committed to delivering the best possible learning experience for you and your family.

High standards. Continuous growth. No shortcuts. That’s how we raise musicians —
and the bar.

Testimonials

Band Aid is such an engaging and rewarding business and it was such a positive in my children’s lives! Nina is now playing professionally on electric and upright bass and Kyle just posted in a music store in Boulder trying to get with a band to play, but it’s hard of course right now. I’m just so happy they have music in their lives and have you to thank as being a “cheerleader “ for them.” – Heather N.

Love the Band Aid vibe. Such a great place to learn the skills —all the instruments, including voice— and develop music appreciation… more like passion! They have an approach I liken to Montessori, where instruction is student interest driven. Such a cool studio, and the regular stage performances are a gift for student and audience alike.” – Laurie G. - KUTX Radio

My daughter is thoroughly enjoying her sessions, and I am so thankful that she can continue to grow in her music during this crazy time. Its a great place of creativity and respite for her.” –Lisa S.

I have been in the Adult Student program at Band Aid for several years now and absolutely love it! The staff are wonderful and deeply care about each student and their development as a musician. I have grown so much as a pianist, performer, and songwriter during my time there, and I now perform regularly around Austin. Special thanks go out to James, Claire, Candi, and Wes for all of their support. Band Aid has opened a whole new world to me and helped my dreams to become a reality – I am forever grateful and am so happy to be a part of the Band Aid family.” – Alexandria P.

“This is a great program that both my kids have participated in. Super supportive and positive vibe. Love the focus on playing live with others. The staff is comprised of fully legit local musicians, all of whom love the kids as much as they love the music.” – Slade C.
